A cultural and historical survey of the art of Burgundy, Flanders and Holland during the Golden Age of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. This exploration of the unique geographical, political, economic, religious and social environment of northern Europe in the age of discovery forms the backdrop for systems of patronage and the art market which nourished some of the greatest artists in history, including Rembrandt, Vermeer, Rubens and Breughel.
