Topics include studying functions, function families, their properties and transformations, compositions, inverses and combinations, complex numbers, and vectors. Function families include linear, trigonometric, logarithmic, exponential, polynomial, power, and rational. Multiple representations of functions are emphasized.
Instructor Information
Instructor: David Monarres
Email: monarresd@smccd.edu (Best way to contact me)
Phone: 415-763-5017
Website: https://smccd.instructure.com/
Office: 18-312 and the Math Lab in the Learning Center or on Zoom
Zoom Personal Room: https://smccd.zoom.us/j/4571528134 (Text or Email me to open room)
Office Hours: Tues and Thursdays from 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM or by appointment.
Materials
Textbook: This course will use the book Precalculus, 2nd Ed by Abramson et al. This book will automatically be delivered via Canvas without charge. If you would like to purchase a hard copy, it can be purchased from the bookstore or through Amazon. A pdf version of the text can also be downloaded, but the publisher recommends that the online reader read it.
A TI-83/84 calculator: To make your life much easier, we will use this calculator heavily in lectures and homework. A non-TI calculator will probably work, but the user will be responsible for figuring out how to operate it.
Computer/Tablet/Chromebook: A computing device with reliable internet access is required to complete homework.
Student Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, a student will meet the following outcomes:
Find limits at a point or at infinity of polynomial and rational functions in graphical or function notation
Identify transformations applied to the basic function families or trigonometric functions, including transformations, translations, and reflections.
Solve equations or inequalities modeling real-life applications.
Grading
Your final grade will consist of:
30% - Online Homework and Reading Assignments
20% - Classwork and Support Assignments
30% - Midterm Exams
20% - Cumulative Final Exam
Grading Scale
Letter Grade Weighted Average

Online Homework
Homework will be assigned in MyOpenMath (through CANVAS) frequently, and due dates will be announced in class. You should ask questions about homework during office hours or get help in the STEM Center. You can also post questions using the Ask My Instructor a Question feature. Late homework will be accepted with a penalty of 25% of the final score. Start your homework early. Struggling through homework is where students learn the material.
Exams
Three in-person exams will be given. No makeup exams will be given, so please plan ahead.
Final Exam
The final examination is scheduled for Wednesday, May 24 at 8:35 AM. This date and time are set by the university and cannot be rescheduled.
COVID-19
It wouldn't be 202X without some talk about COVID-19.
Masking
The SMCCCD follows San Mateo County Health orders to determine when a mask is required to be worn indoors and by whom. Mask requirements are part of the County health order and fall under Standa"
