Students will read diverse texts in various genres, and they will connect their reading to their exploration of their own experience and critical perspectives. On the basis of these connections, they will design and write essays with a distinct purpose and audience in mind. <p>Multiple measures, including high school transcripts, are now being used to help determine proper placement of students into English 100 and other English courses.  This means that all students entering College of San Mateo may use their high school transcripts to determine their English course placement. The English Placement Test, which measures reading and writing ability, is recommended but not required of all entering freshmen to assist with placement. Students transferring to College of San Mateo with credit in college English can use their transcripts to assist with placement, bypassing the need for English placement testing. Students who feel that their high school or college transcripts do not reflect their current abilities may want to take the placement test.
