Introduction to the notation and fundamental theoretical elements of Western music cultures demonstrated through a variety of styles and periods, from classical to pop. Includes pitch and rhythm concepts, melodic and harmonic structures, and fundamental musicianship. Application of the basic principles of music theory to important musical works of different styles and periods. This course deepens students' appreciation of the broad historical and cultural contexts of music as an aesthetic and creative endeavor.
