PHYS 250, 260, 270 PHYSICS WITH CALCULUS I, II, III (4, 4, 4)


Hours/semester: 48-54 lecture/48-54 lab.

Prerequisite: PHYS 250 –MATH 251 and concurrent enrollment in or completion of MATH 252, or appropriate placement test score and other measures as appropriate, or equivalent; PHYS 260 – PHYS 250 and MATH 252, or equivalent. PHYS 270 – PHYS 250 and MATH 252, or equivalent.

This three-semester physics sequence is designed to give the student majoring in engineering, physics, or chemistry a thorough foundation in the fundamentals of physics.

PHYS 250 PHYSICS WITH CALCULUS I – The first semester of a three-semester sequence of calculus-based physics. Designed to give students majoring in engineering, physics or chemistry a thorough foundation in the fundamentals of physics. Covers Newtonian mechanics, including gravitation and mechanical oscillations. The laboratory portion covers measurement and analysis of phenomena discussed in lecture.

Transfer credit: UC; CSU (B1, B3).

PHYS 260 PHYSICS WITH CALCULUS II – The second semester of a three-semester sequence of calculus-based physics (may also be taken as the third semester). Designed to give students majoring in engineering, physics or chemistry a thorough foundation in the fundamentals pf physics. Covers electricity, magnetism and electromagnetic waves. The laboratory portion covers measurement and analysis of phenomena discussed in lecture.

PHYS 270 PHYSICS WITH CALCULUS III – The third semester of a three-semester sequence of calculus-based physics (may also be taken directly after PHYS 250). Designed to give students majoring in engineering, physics or chemistry a thorough foundation in the fundamentals of physics. Covers fluids, thermodynamics, waves and light, and modern physics. The laboratory portion covers measurement and analysis of phenomena discussed in lecture.
