IMPORTANT ENROLLMENT INFORMATION

The San Mateo County Community College District has established a procedure for enforcing the prerequisites for English 836, Writing Development and English 100, Reading and Composition, English 110, Literature and Composition, and English 165, Advanced Composition via a computerized prerequisite checking system. If you have not met the stated prerequisite for ENGL 836, ENGL 100, ENGL 110, or ENGL 165 you are blocked from enrolling in the course. If you believe you have met the prerequisite, review the information on the College Web site: www. canadacollege.net/admissions/prereqs.html. You may also contact the Cañada College Counseling Office, phone 650 306-3452, Building 9, Room 120 for assistance. Please note that ALL prerequisites, in addition to those for English 836, 100, 110, 165 continue to be enforced.

A Cañada College English Placement Test or ESL Placement Test is required for enrollment in English and English for non-native speakers (ESL) courses. ENGL 200 INTRODUCTION TO LINGUISTICS: A SURVEY OF LANGUAGE (Also LING 200)

Units (Letter grade) 3; Class Hours: Minimum of 48 lecture hours/semester; Recommended: Eligibility for READ 836, and ENGL 836 or ESL 400; Prerequisite(s): None.

Description: The origin and development of spoken and written languages, language acquisition, and the evolution of language are studied in this course. The basics of linguistics including systems of phonetics and phonology, semantics, morphology and syntax are also studied. There is also a strong focus on the grammar and sentence structure of standard written English. Transfer: CSU: DSI, UC. (IGETC 4)
