ESOL 840 ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES IV Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9:10 am -11 :00 am Room: (8-224) Course Information: Instructor: Nariman Ayesh Email: ayeshn@smccd.edu. I'll be responding to email and Canvas Inbox message within 48 hours, not counting weekends and holidays. • Physical Office: 8-215 • Tentative Office Hours Times: • Monday and Friday (in person 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM) If these times do not work, talk to me. We can find a time that will. Scheduled Meeting Times: • Monday, Wednesday & Friday 9:10-11 :00 AM, in-person, Room 8-224 • We will have a break (10 minutes) in the middle of class with each class meeting. Time Requirement Outside of Class: • This class may require up to 12 hours of your time each week on homework. Required Materials: 1. Alexie, Sherman. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Little Brown Books, 2009. ISBN: 978-0316013697. 2. Ediger, Anne M, and Linda Lee. Elements of Success 3. Oxford, 2014. ISBN: 978-0194028264. • There is also a newer edition that is okay to use. You do not need the online access code. • It’s okay to have a used grammar book as long as you do not have answers already written in the book. 3. 3-Ring Binder 4. You will need reliable access to a computer and the Internet to best succeed in this class. 5. For best results, use Canvas on your computer, not your phone! Course Description : Offers practice in writing organized and well-developed paragraphs and essays to develop composition skills. Students will build reading skills with a focus on critical thinking. Emphasis on high-intermediate grammar structures and editing within the context of the student's own work. (Units do not count toward the Associate Degree.) Student Learning Outcomes (What you will learn): Upon successful completion of this course, a student will meet the following outcomes: 1. Write an essay in a scaffolded, in-class process, demonstrating critical thinking while responding to the prompt with organization, development and support. 2. Apply reading strategies to unabridged academic texts demonstrating critical thinking in summaries and comprehension questions. 3. Apply high-intermediate and advanced grammar structures to own writing. • Recommended Preparation: ESOL 830 or equivalent. • Instructional methods: Typical methods of instruction may include lecture, activity, discussion, and individualized instruction.
